On March 3rd the new European Regulation 995/2010, best known as EU Timber Regulation (EUTR), became law. With this regulation the introduction of wood and wood products illegally obtained (paper included) into the European market becomes a crime and the companies involved with these products have to adopt a Due Diligence System.

The illegal wood saw represents a great business in many areas of the world. UNEP (United Nations Environment Programme) and Interpol estimated that the illegal wood saw comprises between 10% and 30% of the total amount of wood used. In many cases it has a devastating impact on forests and it damages the rights and sustenance of the local populations.

Since ever Tondin aims to products which are really respectful of nature and the environment. The proof is represented by the FSC® Certification, which adapted its system to the requisites of the EUTR Regulation. In particular, some minor revisions were introduced, such as those regarding the Standards for the Controlled Wood, Forest Management and Chain of Custody.

Though recognizing the exclusion of all the illegally obtained wood from the Italian and European market as an absolute priority, Tondin, in agreement with FSC®, considers legality only as a starting point in order to reach a wood and forest management really attentive of social and environmental values too.
